This week’s Weekend Movie Recommendation is a film called “The Proposition.” If you’ve never heard of this movie it stars Guy Pierce (Memento, Count of Monte Cristo, LA Confidential) Danny Huston (30 Days of Night, X-Men Origins, Robin Hood) and Ray Winstone (The Departed, Hugo, King Arthur). It is directed by John Hillcoat and the music is by Nick Cave.
Set during the 1880s in the harsh unforgiving Australian Outback, Charlie Burns (Pierce) is presented with an impossible proposition. To save his imprisoned younger brother from the gallows Charlie has 9 days to track down and kill his wanted, older psychotic brother.
This is a visually stunning tale of loyalty, betrayal and violence set in a land where it seems almost impossible to live. The movie is soooo good. It is the most realistic film in terms of what it must have been like to live back in those times, I’ve ever seen. You can taste the dirt & sweat and feel the flies around you as you are engulfed in this world. The film is pretty violent and graphic as well so take note if you have a weak stomach or kids.
Nic Cave scored the film with a haunting and at times unnerving soundtrack. This adds so much to the film helping the viewer get inside of the head of these notorious outlaws and their twisted reality.
I recommend buying this one because you’ll want to watch more than once. The Proposition is truly a great film that kind of slid under the radar, though critics gave it exceptional reviews. Check it out and let me know what you think.
